Join us for our next production - a new arrangement of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera!
Welcome to the Rose Opera Company website!
The Rose Opera Company is a fresh and exciting new ensemble consisting of up-and-coming singers from London's leading music conservatoires. Founded in 2009 by soprano Eleanor Briggs, the critically-acclaimed company was created to enable young operatic singers to gain experience in unusual repertoire, and to encourage the performance of opera in venues previously only used to host traditional plays. Members of the cast have recently worked with high-profile groups such as Grange Park Opera, British Youth Opera, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, and the Monteverdi Choir. The company is accompanied by The Rose Opera Orchestra, an ensemble of London-based players with a love of opera, and is directed by composer/conductor Danyal Dhondy.
R.O.C.'s inaugural show was a new production of Mozart's very first opera Apollo et Hyacinthus, written when he was just eleven years old, which was performed in the original Latin text. The company has a close relationship with The Rose Theatre, Bankside's first playhouse (where both Shakespeare and Marlowe worked and performed) and plan to perform there again with future productions. Apollo et Hyacinthus raised around £1000 for the Rose Theatre Trust, which is raising funds to re-excavate the foundations of the theatre and open a public exhibition.
Their 2011-2012 season will include the world premiere of Danyal Dhondy's Just So in collaboration with the Kensington Chamber Orchestra, a new translation of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona, and an exciting new production of Bizet's Carmen with an emphasis on physicality and dance. There will also be ongoing fundraising concerts featuring cast and orchestra members to raise the funds needed to produce these shows.
